The generally accepted reading of the kanji is protector of the earth. A breakdown of the kanji follows:
"chiba mamoru" = "protector of the
Earth"
CHI = earth, ground
The "CHI" kanji is the one used in "chikyuu",
which means the Earth; this reference is important.
BA = place
mamoru = to protect; the kanji used for "mamoru" does
mean protection, but is read differently.
Throughout the entire series, starting when Usagi runs into him, Mamoru serves as Usagi's love (whether directly or indirectly). This feeling of love is returned quite strongly by Mamoru as the seasons progress. This is in spite of some hardships that occur in the series.
As a child, Mamoru is orphaned when his parents die in a car accident. He is alone for most of his childhood; his friend was Fiore, an alien who reappears in the Sailor Moon R Movie. Currently, he lives alone in an apartment in Juubangai.
Mamoru's alternate persona is Tuxedo Kamen who appears when the Senshi need help. In these appearences, Tuxedo Kamen usually gives a motivational speech which prods the Senshi to success. The two main tools of Tuxedo Kamen are his roses and his cane; they are used for attack and defence.
For some time during the Sailor Moon R series, Mamoru loses his memory and wanders as Tsukikage no Knight. Eventually, his memory is restored and he returns to being Tuxedo Kamen. More information is available in the Sailor Moon R series summary.
Mamoru has no named powers in any of his personae. However, he can make amazing leaps and can heal (in Sailor Moon Super S series).
