Site Future
Well, in this page, I get a chance to give my comments about the sites featuring design notes, goals and future enhancements to the page; I also get to use the word "I" a lot ^_^;;
In general, please feel free to link to this site. As it is sometimes said, "Link Free[ly]" ^_^ As of this point in time, I don't have a banner for this site yet. I may yet design one in the future; if you wish to be notified when I finally get around to making the banner (or commissioning someone else to do so ^_^;;), please email me ^_^. As well, if you are willing to make me a banner, I'd be really really grateful.
The idea for this site originated in June 1997 when I was introduced to Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon via the Internet. Luckily, one of the first sites I went to had a link to Doi's page so I was able to skip the learning curve. I noticed that Doi did not have all of the summaries on his page so I decided to develop the "Sailor Moon Synopsis Link Page" which would contain links to every synopsis on the Internet. Somewhere in this process, the idea for this site came along which would be a quick introduction to Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon.
The original design of the page featured a black background with white text and red to designate links. As some time passed my design became much more simpler. Finally, due to trouble with some graphics, I changed to a white background with black text which is what the site currently uses; a very simple design that is quick loading.
In general, this site is quite simple. There is very little in the way of graphics save for character pictures, kanji and pictures of the various series' logos. I like it this way in that it is very fast loading and keeps a scholarly feel to the site.
This site maintains a scholarly approach throughout. This is achieved by a lack of bias in the text, use of the third person at almost all times and by proper documentation of everything. The other important note is that the characters are treated like as they are supposed to be; characters of fiction. Thus, all references are made in present tense. No speculation on the characters' future is given for precisely this same reason. ^_^
All works used are documented following modified Modern Language Association's (MLA) rules of documentation with exception being made to e-mail about Indiana list miscellanea. The modification is that the date that the URL was accessed is omitted. The only point in which I did not follow the spirit of the MLA rules is in the process of documenting sources directly in the text; if this was done, the text would be very fragmented; this is my one instance in which I bow to design principles.
Due to a lack of time, I've been finding it difficult to work on this site, or any of my other sites/projects. So, the removal of the URL dates is meant to speed up the update processes. The "Last revised" date on the page should be indicative of how fresh the links are. This change is being phased in over the next couple of updates.
The one aspect, which I hate to admit, that I have been quite anal-retentive on is trying to keep a consistant look. This coupled with my desire to hand-code the site has dragged on the development a long time ^_^;;
For anyone who cares, the two big most important pieces of software that I've been recently using for this site is "HTML-Kit" (a text based editor with HTML verification) and "Xenu" which verifies links and gives me a surprisingly lot of information about other sites. ^_^;
I will admit that I seen relatively few original Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon yet. (Episodes 43-46, 98-127 (S complete), 166-178, Sailor Moon S Movie, the Ami special and Super S special.) "Why?" one may ask. The reason is that I have a list of anime ahead that I want to see. Due to this, this site thus exposes my entire personality; I can't hide anything of personality due to the fact that most of this site was researched. ^_^.
The counter is probably slightly inaccurate due to many failures; the current counter is server provided (not in a cgi-bin) so it should be very accurate.
This site is not meant to be a replacement for the current information distributing sites but rather a guide to them. Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon for Neophytes is designed to be a quick introduction to Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon without being overwelming; I consider it "Doi-light" ^_-
To be blunt and vain, one day, I would like to see this site considered one of the reference sources and to be the first place newbies are told to go for information. It's a big goal, but I can dream, can't I? ^_- A more plausible goal is to obtain 100 visitors to the main page/day.
There are two more things that I thought I would add to the discussion of the site in general. The first being awards and the second being webrings.
In concern to awards, I have thought for a while on this issue. My decision is to accept awards pending my approval of the award but not to actively apply for awards. There are several rationale behind this decision. Firstly, even though I do like getting recognition, it has to be noted that there are already many awards out on the Internet which give awards to any particular page regardless of quality. I have chosen only to accept awards that are selective and thus, ones in which winning them is a true honour. The second concept, touched on earlier, is that I will not actively strive/apply for awards. The much higher honour, in my opinion, is when someone else recommends the site for an award (which I won't discourage ^_-). I could easily apply for a slew of awards and receive a stack of them (that's what I did with my very first site which is no longer in existance ^_^;;) but it seems to cheapen the idea of winning.
On a related note, being a scholar, I am always willing to be reviewed. In fact, I would encourage reviews of this site so I can get feedback on what to update/correct. I don't mind getting bad reviews--constructive comments are what makes this site better.
The second topic is that of webrings. After thinking about webrings for a while, I have decided that BSSM for Neophytes will not join any webrings because the webring concept does not fit my design ^_^;; (I don't want to have a header page with just webrings, etc.)
The pages that will be frequently updated are the miscellanea pages and of course the links ^_-
