Fan Clubs
Miscellanea
There are all sorts of terms and clubs floating around the Internet to confuse the neophyte... for example, what are the Otaku Wars?
This page is broken up into several sub-sections for ease of use. "General Concepts and Terms" refer to various terms and concepts that exist in Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon fandom. "Indiana Sailor Moon Miscellanea" refers to miscellanious concepts and ideas that exist on the Indiana Sailor Moon mailing list. Thanks goes to the list for explaining the things that were missed or in error."Clubs" refers to the various fanclubs on the Internet while finally "Miscellanea" is everything that doesn't fit in anywhere else ^_-
This is not meant to be a comprehensive list; for more information on terms commonly used in anime, you are advised to view the Frequently Used Term list as maintained by Xplo.
alt.fan.sailor-moon
This is the newsgroup dedicated to the discussion of Sailor
Moon...known by many people as (afsm).
anime
Refers to Japanese animation; comes from the word animeshon in
Japanese.
Fansubs and Fandubs
These are fan created translations of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor
Moon: fansubs are subtitled translations and fandubs are dubbed
translations. Fansubs are technically illegal although they are
tolerated.
henshin
Refers to tranformation; a commonly used term involving this word
is "henshin sequence" which refers to the transformation
sequence (to Senshi in Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon).
manga
Referring to Japanese comics; often published in "telephone
manga" collections (due to the size of the book--about the
size of a telephone book).
Mixxzine
Mixxzine is a magazine featuring translations of original
Japanese manga...the current manga in Mixxzine includes:
Magic Knight Rayearth, Parasyte, Sorcerer Hunters and Harlem Beat.
Mixxzine used to contain Sailor Moon but Mixx Entertainment
moved it to a sister publication Smile (See entry below).
Mixx Entertainments' treatment of Bishoujo Senshi Sailor
Moon has recently led to much criticism of the company.
In September of 1998, Mixx Publications' website was hacked. A
copy of the hacked site exists here.
As well, a copy of "A Fan's View on Mixx
Entertainment" has been published in issue 53 of
Protoculture Addicts; a copy of the
article has been placed on the site.
Moonie Code
This is one of the first things a newbie will see in the email
signatures of certain Sailor Moon fans. This is like geek code,
etc. explaining your favourite senshi, etc. To help ease in the
shock of this bizarre arrangement of letters and numbers, one may
wish to examine this anotated Moonie Code
(which is in fact my own). The entire code and its annotation can
be found at
http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Towers/7933/mooniecode.txt. A
Java applet exists, as well, to translate code into meaningful
statements at
http://chat.carleton.ca/~jhelfert/mc.html
odango atama
The definition for this term is mentioned in the Sailor Moon FAQ,
but it is one of the terms that newbies often ask about. Otango
atama are often used to refer to the balls of hair on Usagi's
head. Otango are a type of dumpling.
Otaku Wars
This is a thread that got started on the alt.fan.sailor-moon
newsgroup when Sailor Moon ended. It originally started out as a
discussion on which senshi was better, but after other anime
characters, etc. were brought in, it became a free for all. Thanks
to Leonard Houle for explaining this.
Sailor Moon H Season AKA the Sixth Season
This definition is probably why this page exists. Many people are
confused by mention of this. Very simply: THIS DOES NOT EXIST! The
Sailor Moon H season is a joke played by some people on neophytes
and was originated by Peter Evans. The H stands for Hentai, which
in Japanese means perverted... you have been forewarned. It should
be mentioned that there are some independant episodes like
this...one example is called Sailor Venus 5.
Smile
This new publication was established in late 1998 as Mixx
Publications' new entry into the 'middle' teen crowd.
This magazine contained the Super S arc and the Stars arc which was
initially printed two manga pages/actual page but then was revised
to the standard 1:1 ratio.
SOS
This is typically taken to stand for Save Our
Sailors...traditionally SOS is associated with Save Our Sailors.
Save Our Sailors is an organisation designed to try and save the
dub version of Sailor Moon from being cancelled and to try and get
more episodes dubbed. In the past, they have done some rather
interesting things such as organising a Kellogg's Pop Tart
procott and more recently a Irwin Toys procott. Much of their
information is inaccurate and helps amuse those who are better
aquainted with Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. Contrary to what
SOS may say, it had no effect in getting the Pioneer release of the
movies.
Indiana Sailor Moon Miscellanea
Bo-chan
One of the most hated people in list history. This may be because
he threatened to hack the Indiana Majordomo server and kept
advertising his new mailing list.
Lunar Inquisition
This term floated around on the Indiana list a fair amount in the
past, and probably scared off many people. The Lunar Inquisition,
as run by Xplo Eristotle, were people who are dedicated to
educating the population about the original Sailor Moon. The Lunar
Inquisition has since been disbanded and Xplo is no longer on the
Indiana mailing list.
The Flinging
Closely associated with the Lunar Inquisition. The punishment for
those who place incorrect Sailor Moon information on their websites
(and other assorted offences).
Glass Shard Demon/Paredory
The term coined by the list to describe the "Monsters of the
Day" in the Sailor Moon Super S series; paredory is another
phrase used sometimes (seems to be official).
Indiana Kazoo Chorus
This started from an idea suggested by Iskandar Taib; at
conventions, members of the list gather to play anime songs on the
kazoo.
Junk Yard Demon
Disposable monsters found in Gurpinar's saga featuring an evil
Ami and mail servers that seem to always get destroyed.
Len and Mark Saga
A long running fanfic on the Indiana mailing list featuring Mark
Vallen, as leader of the "Black Moon Circus" vs. Leonard
Houle, leader of Houle's Houssars, a mercenary unit. The two
are currently fighting over the state of the world and the heart of
Ami-san. The archieved story can be found at
http://home.global.co.za/~askewb/.
Marie-sama/Marie-seikun
A parody of the miko phenomenon caused by Fushigi Yuugi.
Marie has declared herself to be a god and her own miko (temple
maiden). Hence, being a miko, she needs seishi; there are about 10
seishi currently following her of the possible large large
number.
The Importance of Spatulas
For some reason, spatulas play a significant role on the mailing
list; they are often used for fictional attacks on other list
members ^_- This is probably a Ranma 1/2 reference.
Sailor Moon H Season AKA Sixth Season
See above for more details. This story is propagated by Iskandar
Taib on list to the unsuspecting.
Sailor Stars Image Gallery
There are many nice images on this page, done by Iskandar Taib.
However, the page is _intentionally_ designed to be web browser
malevolent with a number of large images but with no image sizes
coded. The site takes about 2 minutes to load on ASDL so on
any type of modem, the wait is horrendous and may in fact crash the
computer. Surprisingly, there have been over 60 000 visits to the
site. The URL (no hyperlink) is:
http://bigwig.geology.indiana.edu/iskandar/sstars.html
Silly Senshi
A creation of list master Iskandar Taib and continued by member
Michael Kubit; they are designed as "Defenders of the
Dub". The "four/five Silly Senshi are Sailor Fluffy,
Sailor Fuku, Sailor Nobrain and Sailor Lint. The Silly Senshi even
have their own website (in development) at
http://rivendell.fortunecity.com/dungeon/656/index.html
SMML^2
A fanfiction featuring list members created by member Janaki
Jitchotvisut. The work is located at
Any club with over 15 verifiable members is welcome to submit their club for listing. Other clubs are also welcome to submit for listing; however, there is no guarantee that clubs with less than 15 will be listed.
CUTE, CURE and CHIP
These three acronyms refer to fan clubs dedicated to Chibi-Usa.
CUTE stands for "Chibi-Usa is Terrific Everyone" [fans of
Chibi-Usa], CURE stands for "Chibi-Usa is Really Evil"
[self-explanatory] and CHIP stands for "Chibi-Usa's Hair
is Pink" [those who don't care one way or the other].
Lunar Inquisition
Club designed to educate individuals about the original Bishoujo
Senshi Sailor Moon; currently inactive.
RISK.
Rei fan club--"Rei is Super Kakkoki."
Save Our Sanity. An anti-SOS organisation.
WOAH.
Hotaru fan club--"Worshippers Of the Astonishing
Hotaru"
A general hodpodge of things:
