The series begins with Usagi and Co., Mamoru, Unazuki and Motoki watching a solar eclipse. During this, a unusual circus tent descends onto Tokyo. No one notices except for Usagi but she forgets about it when no one else sees it.
In the tent are the Dead Moon Circus, who serve as the opposition to the Senshi in this series. They are looking for the Pegasus, a mythical creature and through its horn, the Golden Crystal. To do this, the Golden Mirror needs to be found; each person contains a mirror (of their dreams), but only a very pure person contains the Golden Mirror (which features the Pegasus in it).
To find the Golden Mirror, Neherenia (the leader of the Dead Moon Circus) through her servant Zirconia, sends out the Amazon Trio (which consists of Fish Eye, Tigers Eye and Hawks Eye) to find the Golden Mirror.
In their search for the Golden Mirror, the Amazon Trio's first target is Unazuki. As expected, Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon come to Unazuki's rescue. During the battle, the Pegasus appears and upgrades their attacks.
Later, the Amazon Trio attempt again to find the Golden Mirror but this time try Usagi's mother Ikuko. Once again, the Pegasus comes in and aids Sailor Moon and Sailor Chibi Moon; in this battle, he gives the two Moons the ability to become a "Super" form of themselves. Chibi-Usa is also given the power to summon the Pegasus through a bell.
For some time, the Amazon Trio keeps attempting to find the Golden Mirror but keep failing due to the Senshi stopping them. During this period, all of the other Senshi are given more powerful attacks by the Pegasus.
After several failures by the Amazon Trio, Zirconia gives them one last chance; the target is Mamoru. Fish Eye disguises himself as a woman and tries to flirt with Mamoru but to no avail. This gets Fish Eye to thinking about his actions; he eventually comes up with the conclusion that what he is doing is wrong. Later he realises that none of the members of the Amazon Trio dream.
After Fish Eye fails, Neherenia sends Tigers Eye to kill Usagi. Tigers Eye is able to remove Usagi's heart mirror. At that point, Fish Eye appears and stops him. Unfortunately, the Amazoness Quartet, whom Neherenia sent to shadow the Amazon Trio arrives and attacks the Amazon Trio. During this fight, Usagi's heart mirror is destroyed and she dies.
Fish Eye and Hawks Eye are saddened by Usagi's death and agree to give their energy to bring her back to life. Usagi is revived and she and the rest of the Senshi (who had recently arrived) are able to defeat the monster the Amazoness Quartet sent. Chibi-Usa summons the Pegasus who revives the Amazon Trio and gives them dreams.
The Amazoness Quartet is the next group of enemies the Senshi face. The Amazoness Quartet differ fairly significantly from the Amazon Trio in one major way. The Amazoness Quartet are aware of the fact that they cannot dream, which is unlike the Amazon Trio for most of the series, and they do not care.
Each member of the Amazoness Quartet is paired off with one of the Inner Senshi save Moon. In the following episodes, each Senshi develops their "Super" form and is able to defeat their particular member of the Amazoness Quartet.
During this period, the Pegasus explains his story to Chibi-Usa. He explains that in his world, the creatures live off the energy of beautiful people. However, one day, the Dead Moon Circus tries to capture the Golden Crystal; if the Dead Moon Circus gains control of the Golden Crystal, the Pegasus' world (Erusion) will become a world of darkness. The Pegasus also reveals his true persona, that of Helios, guardian of the Golden Crystal.
Eventually, Neherenia takes over the role of the Amazoness Trio. Eventually, it is discovered that Chibi-Usa has the Golden Mirror and the Pegasus is found. With this, she covers the world in darkness. The Amazoness Trio, at this point in time, is so annoyed with Neherenia that they steal the Golden Crystal and give it to Sailor Moon.
Sailor Moon tries to use the Golden Crystal but fails. However, Chibi-Usa tells Sailor Moon that the energy of the entire world is needed to make it work. With people chanting "Moon Crisis Power", the darkness is lifted and the energy from the crystal destroys the Dea Moon Circus' tent.
Neherenia captures the unconscious Chibi-Usa (due to the power of the crystal) and takes her on to a piece of debris which Neherenia then floats upwards. Sailor Moon grabs on to the debris and eventually makes it to the top where she confronts Neherenia.
Neherenia explains her side of the story saying that without the dreams of people, she will become ugly. Sailor Moon says she knows how Neherenia feels which angers Neherenia causing her to throw Chibi-Usa off. Sailor Moon jumps off after Chibi-Usa while Neherenia seals herself in a mirror to keep her beauty.
While falling, Sailor Moon changes into Princess form and eventually reaches Chibi-Usa. After Chibi-Usa eventually wakes up, she summons Helios who converts to Pegasus form and gives the two wings. They float down both ending up in Princess form. At the end of the series, Helios returns to Erusion saddening Chibi-Usa.
